Dear Friends,
As summer turns to fall and it starts to grow cooler, many of you have written in to ask me about dandruff. Specifically about all-natural solutions for dandruff through one of my favorite remedies, essential oils. Below are a selection of questions I have received on this topic, with my answers. I hope you find them interesting and helpful.
CAN ESSENTIAL OILS GET RID OF DANDRUFF? ARE THEY POWERFUL ENOUGH?
To answer this question, we first have to discuss what causes dandruff. Dandruff is caused by a number of things. It may be that you are using a hair product that does not agree with you, in which case the easy solution is to stop it. It may also be that your skin is irritated, oily, or dry. And yet another possibility is that you have a yeast-like fungus (malassezia) that is feeding on the oils in your scalp. If this is the case, it is nothing to be ashamed of, as it is unfortunately incredibly common.
I’d like to focus on treating irritated, oily, or dry skin, and treating the fungus. In both cases, I suggest a combination of tea tree, oregano, clove, and neem essential oils in a coconut oil base. Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that work wonders for any kind of skin condition. Same with oregano oil, which has been shown to reduce blemishes and promote clear skin. Studies have shown that clove oil can be an effective antifungal agent. And neem oil can help hair growth as well as promote wound and scar healing and healthier skin.
I suggest putting these oils in a coconut oil base because they can treat both dandruff and dry skin simultaneously. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which makes it one of the best carrier oils for bacterial and fungal problems. Equally important is the fact that it’s inexpensive. I don’t believe that effective wellness solutions should break the bank – if you have dandruff, you’re annoyed enough as it is already!
This combination of essential oils in a coconut oil base is very powerful and is known to be an incredible skin-soothing and anti-fungal blend – perhaps more powerful even than prescription drugs, while still being 100% natural.
That said, if you’d like to keep things slightly more simple, in my opinion, nothing meets neem essential oil synergistically mixed with oregano and tea tree essential oils. “Synergistically mixed,” by the way, means only that when these oils are combined, their beneficial effects multiply. This is a wonderful property of essential oils–they work even better together.
WHAT’S THE QUICKEST WAY TO GET RID OF DANDRUFF WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS?
If you really want to speed up the process of getting rid of your dandruff, I suggest putting even more emphasis on getting rid of your fungal infection. GuruNanda Paracleanse is a wellness remedy that helps balance the gut microbiome while gently detoxifying the body. Due to the power of these all-natural ingredients, Paracleanse can be used on the scalp to treat dandruff as well.
Fill on 1 ml dropper of Paracleanse (about 20 drops), add 4 drops of tea tree oil in it, then add 1 spoon of coconut, almond, castor oil. While I already discussed the benefits of coconut oil, almond oil can increase hair health, while castor oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties – so any of these three will work well. Spread this mixture on your scalp to quickly help soothe dandruff.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF USING ESSENTIAL OILS TO TREAT DANDRUFF?
This is a great question. I know that many people who try Western medicine-backed dandruff treatments, such as you would find in the pharmacy, have side effects like tingling, irritated scalp, and dry hair.
The great news about using essential oils to treat your dandruff is that, unless you are allergic to the plant that the oil is made of, you won’t have any side effects. Especially if you use any of my GuruNanda Essential Oils. I’m very proud that my oils are 100% pure and natural, ethically sourced, and GC-MS tested to ensure the best possible quality. Despite all this, it is also a point of pride that I keep my oils affordable so that all can enjoy their benefits.
In fact, I would argue that using essential oils for dandruff has even more benefits than just repairing your scalp. Essential oils have many wellness benefits and can be used as part of aromatherapy or elsewhere on your skin to soothe irritation or as part of your beauty regimen.
I’ll write more about essential oils and dandruff in the coming posts, but I hope for now I have given you inspiration to soothe your itchy, flaking scalp naturally!
Namaste,
Puneet
