What is an Essential Oil

Have you ever smelled a flower and wished you could keep the scent forever? Have you noticed how certain scents can change your mood and take you back to your childhood? Essential oils capture that magic. Essential oils play a critical role in protecting plants and helping them flourish, which is part of the reason why they often have powerful therapeutic properties.

What is a carrier oil?

When using an essential oil topically, carrier oils allow us to sufficiently dilute essential oils for their safe therapeutic use. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, powerful, and quite aromatic, it is best to mix a small quantity with a plant based oil, like our Sweet Almond or Fractionated Coconut Oil. This reduces the risk of adverse skin reactions and allows the essential oil to be more evenly distributed throughout the skin.

A typical ratio is 1 drop of essential oil to every 10 drops of carrier oil.

Make sure to check our Safety Precautions FAQ for more info.

What is Aromatherapy?

Our modern lifestyles are often filled with stress. Aromatherapy is an excellent way to relax and unwind, leaving stress behind. Aromatherapy is a natural healing method that dates back over 5,000 years when aromatic plant extracts were used regularly for their therapeutic benefits. It involves the use of essential oils in massages or baths. Fill your space with therapeutic essential oils and aromas to experience the gentle relaxation and heightened awareness. This balance of awareness and relaxation provides the perfect environment to help our bodies heal and remain healthy.

Why are your oils cheaper than other oils in the market?

Guru Nanda's essentials are direct from farm to bottle with no middlemen.

There are several companies selling essential oils. One is the mlm kind of companies, that means multi-level-marketing companies. Their oils are great, but their quality does not become better just because their price is better- because they have to pay a layer of people in between. They have to pay the brokers in between- almost between 50-75% of the proceeds that you pay for that essential oil as commissions versus with us, we are one hundred percent direct to you. We are bringing the product from around the globe, from their native country of origin, without a middleman, without a broker, packaging them in-house, testing them in-house, and delivering it to you directly-no middle man, 'nothing added, nothing removed' is our promise to you. And the quality guarantee is that they would be 100% either similar or better than anything else you would buy. On the other hand, a lot of people who are buying essential oils from middlemen, from perfumers are actually not essential oils- they have zero therapeutic value. They can actually even harm you. And those people either do not understand or have the education of buying the essential oils or they don't have the intent. But in our case we are a social entrepreneurship project. My aim is not to make money, my aim is to bring the best quality essential oil at the best affordable value for you- directly from farm to you..

Why do essential oils feel watery?

Essential oils are derived through steam distillation most of the times and they are very very non-viscous, they are aromatic. Versus carrier oils are the thick oily oils. So a lot of people sometimes say "hey your essential oils are like water"- they are supposed to be very thin. Now,  on the other hand, there are certain essential oils like patchouli. Like sandalwood which are woody, they are actually thicker. So it depends which essential oil is in consideration here

Why do you source your essential oils globally?

Every essential oil has its native country of origin. For example, if you grow grapes in your backyard, you can not expect the wine quality to be the same as Bordeaux in France or the grapes grown in Napa Valley in California. Very similar to that, all these essential oils are derived from plants where they were geographically meant to be. The soil, the moisture level, the rain, people's farming in traditional methods- every little thing counts. So we scout the world, go to that particular country where it grows the best. That's why we scout the globe.

How much Carrier Oil Should Be used to mix with Essential oils?

I recommend 1 to 10 ratio but I may be going too far. Although, most aromatherapy schools recommend between 3-5%. Now, the best idea is do you own skin patch test using 3-5% dilution where you use 3-5% essential oils and the balance being the carrier oil. For children go even lower, between 1-3%. Personally, certain oils like lavender & tea tree I even use them direct. They are generally regarded as safe. Although dilution is the key. It is better to be diluted than not.
Sometimes, less is more!

Are essential oils safe for kids?

Do you test your oils?

All GuruNanda oils are tested through a GC/MS machine, which is an extremely sensitive test. It verifies the identity of the specific oil. GuruNanda conducts a GC/MS test in-house and at third party laboratories to ensure that the results match. If there is even .1% chance that we are not satisfied with the results, we throw the oil away. We will never pack a single drop of oil with the GuruNanda brand name on it if we are not 100% assured of the quality of the oil. Every single essential oil is From Farm to You. Nothing added, nothing removed. 100% pure and natural.

What do you mean by 100% pure?

GuruNanda 100% pure and natural essential oils are distilled at the farm level. This means that once the plant is picked, the oil is extracted, placed in a barrel, sealed, and shipped directly to our bottling facility. This process leaves no room for adulteration by a 3rd party. Many aromatherapy products claim to be 100% pure and natural, but they are not. Whether they are for cosmetic, massage, or aromatic purposes, they often contain harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Are your oils organic?

GuruNanda does not use any synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides or GMOs. The majority of our essential oils are hand-picked from their native origins around the globe.

Since many of our oils are from areas where it’s difficult to get USDA certification, and many of the farmers are not educated about the certification processes that are need to be certified organic. We could hire an agency, but this would be cost-prohibitive, and could mean higher prices for our customers. Although we adhere to every rule that is required to be certified, we decided not to use a governing body for certification.

Are your oils therapeutic grade?

Essential oils are derived through steam distillation most of the times and they are very very non-viscous, they are aromatic. Versus carrier oils are the thick oily oils. So a lot of people sometimes say "hey your essential oils are like water"- they are supposed to be very thin. Now, on the other hand, there are certain essential oils like patchouli. Like sandalwood which are woody, they are actually thicker. So it depends which essential oil is in consideration here.

Are all essential oils steam distilled?

Actually there are various ways of extracting essential oils from aromatic plants. The most common method although is steam distillation. Lavender and peppermint are most famous examples of the most famous famous oils that are steam distilled. You take the flower in the still, you pass steam through it, the steam actually takes the essential oil with it, and once you cool the steam, it becomes water and the oil floats on top and that's your essential oil. On the other hand, certain citrus oils like orange and grapefruit, you take the rind of the fruit and you actually cold press it and that's the way the essential oils are derived from citrus oils. On the third aspect of it there are oils that are co2 extracted, which is the third most common method where carbon dioxide gas actually acts as a liquid once its pressurized, it extracts the essential oil and it actually escapes as gas back again once you losen up the pressure. So thats the third most common way. These are the several ways these essential oils are derived.

How do I use essential oils?

You can use essential oils several ways. The most common usage that I recommend is diffusing them in an ultrasonic diffuser. And the second most common recommendation is diluting it with a carrier oil and actually applying it topically. Certain people use certain oils in great dilution- one drop max by ingesting them. And the fourth way that you can use it is actually taking one drop with a carrier oil, rubbing your hands and (deep breathe) inhaling it directly. So these are the four most common ways people have been using them.

How often do I use essential oils?

Although the common answer is use them as often as required, but personally what I think is everything that has some therapeutic-quality, needs to be regulated. So I believe they should be used as needed. So if you have started to feel cold and flu, I would use the thrive blend- but not necessarily I would keep spraying it 24 x 7 around me all the time. So use them as required because these are very potent, very powerful therapeutic property essential oils and I would use them only if needed or as required.

How many drops come in a 15ml bottle?

A 15ml bottle of essential oil typically contains 275-300 drops.

What precautions should I take before using essential oils?

Obviously, the first precaution is keep essential oils away from your eyes- one. Dilute them always before applying them topically. Once you apply them topically, do a little skin patch test to assure that your skin doesn't get irritated. If irritated, stop usage. Use your own mind. Number three ensure that the product is 100% pure and natural. Look at the gc/ms testing of the oil from the company you are buying. And fourthly, you always have to be mindful that if something is making you not feel very good, that means it's probably not good- be mindful of that.

Are your oils safe for consumption?

GuruNanda essential oils are generally used for aromatic or topical use. When properly diluted our oils may be consumed. However, due to the high toxicity of certain oils like Wintergreen, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus, we strongly advise only ingesting oils under the guidance certified aromatherapist or person with knowledge of herbal extracts. Additionally, they should not be given to children.

Which essential oils should never be consumed?

There are tons of essential oils that should never be consumed. But the general ones wintergreen, tea tree, eucalyptus- I would stay away from all the time. Ideally, essential oils are best diffused in case you are going to consume it, you have to consult a medical doctor with a clinical aromatherapy degree.

Can I apply your oils directly to my skin?

The more you use essential oils, the more you will discover their multifaceted nature. When applying topically, dilute the essential oil of your choice with a carrier oil like our fractionated coconut oil or almond oil and use them as a massage oil or body oil.

What Essential Oils should i not use around my dogs?

Dogs are very sensitive, they are almost like your babies, and certain oils that are considered hot oils like thyme, birch, oregano, tea tree, clove- I wouldn’t want to use them around my dog for sure.

And then I have to be very careful of using any other essential oil that actually I can't use undiluted on my skin, I wouldn’t want them to be used around the dog.

What Essential Oils should i not use around my cats?

Cats are very sensitive and I have to be very careful in recommending so you have to consult your vet for that- but I would say tea tree, oregano, thyme, wintergreen- absolutely not!

Now very special message: you can not use all citrus oils which is orange, lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, lime- nothing at all because their liver doesn't have that enzyme that synthesizes them- and secondly you have to also be very careful with the use of peppermint and minty oils- rosemary. Be very careful the cats though

Patch Test

If you have sensitive skin or have never used an essential oil on your skin, we advise conducting a patch test prior to using the essential oil. Apply a small amount of diluted essential oil on to your inner arm. Watch for redness or irritation over the next 24 hours. If either occurs, do not continue to use the essential oil topically.

Sun Exposure

Certain essential oils, such as citrus oils, contain molecules that react with sunlight or UV light from tanning beds. When applying these oils topically, it is important to avoid direct sunlight for 12-48 hours.

Allergies

If you are allergic to a certain food, do not use any essential oils or carrier oils that are derived from the same plant as the allergen.

Pregnancy

Always consult a physician or certified Aromatherapist before using any type of essential oil during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and pets, and never apply concentrated oils to mucous membranes or sensitive areas.

How do I dilute essential oils for safe application to the skin?

Since essential oils are highly concentrated, it's highly recommended to dilute them in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. The most common safe dilution rate is 2%. This comes out to about 6 drops of essential oil for every 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. Enjoy your essential oils safely.

No Mist?

Check water levels. Having too much or too little water can stop the diffuser from working correctly.

Fill the base with water a little below the max fill line, then test the diffuser. If the diffuser is not properly dispersing mist, remove a little water and re-test. Continue this step until the diffuser is working properly.

How Do I Clean My Diffuser?

To ensure the diffuser works properly, we recommend cleaning the diffuser while changing oils, or every 3 days.

• Disconnect the diffuser unit from power before cleaning

• Use a cloth to clean exterior part of the unit with water

• Use a cotton swab or cloth to clean the water tank

• Keep water from entering the vent

• Do not use harsh detergents, solvents or abrasive agents to clean the diffuser unit

• Use the diffuser unit on a dry and even surface

What is California Prop 65?

Prop 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires for all California businesses to provide “clear and reasonable” warnings to all California consumers if a product does contain any of the chemicals/substances listed by OEHHA (http://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65) that is known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. The warning is a requirement even in instances where the chemical substance has been detected in miniscule/trace amounts where the OEHHA safe harbor levels have not been identified and even when the exposure limit is below FDA, ANSI, and WHO guidelines. Prop 65 warning is not required if the exposure to the chemical is below the safe harbor levels. A Prop 65 warning does not mean a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. Small businesses with fewer than 10 employees are exempt from the warning requirement and discharge prohibition of Prop 65.

Are Gurunanda Products Affected?

As an essential oil and aromatherapy specialist, GuruNanda continues to ensure our product meet Prop 65 requirements. Our essential oils are sourced based on its 100% pure and natural attributes, nothing added, nothing removed. Our products contain naturally occurring elements which are derived from naturally grown plants without any additives, preservatives, or adulterants. GuruNanda uses stringent testing with quality guidelines for all our essential oils and diffusers. All our essential oils are tested and analyzed from the farm level through the finished packaged goods. This is to ensure all our essential oils remain 100% pure and natural through the filling processes which are supported by our GCMS reports. We further conduct C14 analysis when an essential oil has been suspected to have any special fluctuations in the GCMS reports to ensure the absence of any synthetic additions by error or fault.

Prop 65 only requires a warning on a product if the exposing chemical is above the safe harbor limits. You can continue to enjoy GuruNanda aromatherapy 100% pure and natural essential oils to promote a natural, healthy and vibrant lifestyle.
