Making Essential Oils Safe For Kids Is Easy!
Our kids mean everything to us. As parents, we already make tons of decisions about the health and happiness of our little ones each day. Many concerned parents ask, “Are essential oils safe for kids?”
Essential oils are highly concentrated. While essential oils can certainly be used safely with children, it's important to understand how to use them properly.
This article was written in collaboration with a certified aromatherapist, who has professional advice on how to use essential oils safely with kids.
Here are three easy ways to make essential oils safe for kids:
1. Only Use Essential Oils that are 100% Pure and Natural
Why emphasize the purity?
Unfortunately, it’s a necessity at this point. Many essential oil companies fabricate their products with synthetic solutions designed to mimic authentic essential oils. These synthetic substitutions are not only missing the therapeutic properties of essential oils, but they can also be hazardous as they are chemical concoctions that are not disclosed by companies.
Be sure to choose a brand you can trust to deliver 100% pure and natural essential oils. Always check for a guarantee/promise on the website as a representation of their authenticity and responsibility as a company. 2. Dilute With a Carrier Oil, or Use a Roll-On
As mentioned earlier, essential oils are very concentrated. This means that many essential oils, if not diluted, could cause skin irritation as well as other unpleasantries. There are two primary techniques to dilute essential oil and make it ready to use for children.
- Dilute with Carrier Oil:
One option is to take a 100% pure and natural essential oil and dilute it in a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil. GuruNanda recommends that you dilute it by using 99% carrier oil and just 1% essential oil.
2. Use a Roll-On:
Guru Nanda carries pre-diluted roll-ons that are ready to use. Not only does this take the dilution work out of the equation, it also comes in a roll-on bottle, which makes it easy to apply immediately. For example, Calm Little Chick is an excellent roll-on to help kids calm down when they’re too hyperactive or excited.
Note: Apply to wrists, temples, and bottoms of feet.
3. Diffuse the Essential Oil
This is generally the safest way to use essential oils. If the child is using a roll-on, s(he) can simply inhale from the bottle. However, when it comes to 100% pure and natural essential oils, we recommend that you diffuse them with caution, with a specific intention, and for a particular period of time. For example, if you want your child to relax and get ready for sleep, try diffusing an essential oil that’s safe for kids for an hour or two.
Since children are still in their early development stages, it’s not recommended that you leave a diffuser on at all times. Avoid using essential oils for children under six months as they have more delicate skin and undeveloped immune systems.
If you’ve been interested in essential oils but are worried about how they might affect kids, you now have a foundational understanding of how to make essential oils safe for kids. The most important thing to understand is that essential oils are very concentrated and can be too potent for children. Diluting your essential oils or using a roll-on can make things safe and easy. And remember to diffuse essential oils with caution and for specific purposes.
