Sadhguru Speaks out Against Stress Management
The way Sadhguru sees it, we should manage things that are important to us such as our business, our family, or our property. However, those are all things that we work to develop, and Sahguru suggests that we’ve given stress too much credit and allowed it to be integrated into our idea of life. Here’s a quote from him:
“When I first landed in the United States, everybody was talking about ‘stress management.’ I didn’t really get this because, in my understanding, we manage things that are precious to us – our business, our family, our money, our wealth and our children. Why is everybody giving so much importance to stress in the first place?”

Manage Your Inner Self
Many people mistakenly think that they “will be happy when…” something particular happens. However, there are too many financially successful people who are depressed and too many financially modest people who are happy. Circumstances are not what improve life. Your inner state is the foundation of everything.
Sadhguru had this to say on Business Today:
“What you identify as stress, fear or anger doesn’t happen because of what’s around you, but due to your own faculties not taking instructions from you. If your mind was taking instructions from you, it would create pleasantness, not unpleasantness. It is your ability to manage your own system that causes this problem. Assume control over your own being, and everything will be fine.”
Manage Your Context
It’s amazing how big a difference context can make. Sadhguru uses a beautiful example of three men working together on isha.sadhguru.org. Read below.
“On a certain day, three men were working in one place. Another man came by and asked the first man, “What are you doing here?” The man looked up and said, “Are you blind? Can’t you see I’m cutting stone?” This person moved on to the next man and asked, “What are you doing here?” That man looked up and said, “Something to fill my belly. So I come here and do whatever they ask me to do. I just have to fill my belly, that’s all.” He went to the third man and asked, “What are you doing here?” That man stood up in great joy and said, “I’m building a beautiful temple here!” All of them were doing the same thing, but their experience of what they were doing was worlds apart.”
Think of your own life. How might you change the way you look at it to realize that happiness is right here right now. You won’t have time for stress.
Manage Your Thoughts
One of the most common reasons for stress is thought. Many people experience this first-hand with anxiety. What happens is a person will feel some anxiety, but then they will try to explain that pain to themselves with thinking. Unfortunately, many people are not very aware of their own thoughts, which gives your mind an opportunity to run. As the mind continues to produce reasons for your anxiety, you will likely begin to experience more anxiety and a loss of control of your life. Here’s what Sadhguru had to say about it:
“Your mind is society’s trashcan. Everyone who passes by stuff something into your head. You have no choice about what to take, and what to discard. If you take another look at this knowledge, you will realise it’s just something that is expected from you; it has nothing to do with who you are.”
Your stress levels really are up to you. While many of us attribute our stress to external circumstances, this simply is not how it works.
